Charitable Work by Freemasons

The three Great Principles by which we stand are Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

Freemasons are taught to practise charity and to care, not only for their own, but also for the community as a whole both by charitable giving, and by voluntary efforts and works as individuals.

From its earliest days, Freemasonry has been concerned with the care of orphans, the sick and the aged. This work continues today. In addition, large sums are given to national and local charities.

Masonic charity is exercised at every level: individual Lodges make gifts and give aid to their own communities and every Province also gives large sums of money to regional causes.

Nationally, our efforts are channelled through the four main charity organisations:

The Grand Charity

The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys

The Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution

The Masonic Samaritan Fund.

Brethren, we have now entered a new calendar year and are nearly halfway through our Masonic year to the next Annual Meeting.

The Provincial Grand Master, Ieuan Redvers Jones

I have had the pleasure of attending a number of Lodges and enjoyed the ceremony of Banner Dedications on quite a few occasions recently. The Banners have all been beautifully prepared and each occasion has been in its own way special. The Provincial Grand Chaplain has been remarkable in the preparation and delivery of the Orations at each dedication.

Long Service certificates are being issued in great numbers and I will in a few days time have the pleasure of presenting a 65 year Certificate to W.Bro. Dr Emlyn Owen PAsst GDC of Arfon Lodge at Queen Elizabeth Court where he and Mrs Owen reside. Dr Owen has been a great supporter of Masonry in general and this Province in particular.

Presenting Certificates is tinged with sadness because I come to realise that we have an ageing Brotherhood. Our responsibility is to try and encourage young men into Masonry. Let us challenge each other to find ways of doing so.

I leave you with two thoughts. White Table evenings? Asking non Masonic friends and their wives to an informal evening in the Lodge room and introducing the guests to the basics of our Society?

Some Lodges have held successful events which have resulted in new members. I encourage Lodges to hold these events and to let me know whether the effort has been successful.

Ieuan Redvers Jones,
R.W. Provincial Grand Master

R.M.T.G.B. - The Trust for Girls & Boys

Last year we spent almost £8.5M in caring for our beneficiaries. In the last 21 years our income from Festival Appeals has amounted to about £52M, but over the same period we have spent over £155M.

The reason we can do this is that we have income from investments laid down by previous generations of Freemasons.

Despite a 100% increase in the number of beneficiaries we now assist compared to 20 years ago we are able to maintain our proud record of never having turned away an eligible child in need due to lack of funds.

In spring 2009, a complete review of our grant giving policy was undertaken and changes were introduced to ensure that our support not only remains appropriate but effectively targets child poverty and enables us to fulfil our mission.

As a result we are now able to give more support to Masonic grandparents who through necessity are bringing up their grandchildren.
