Cuddly friends for
Glan Clwyd's A & E Department

The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has recently launched a scheme in partnership with North Wales Freemasons to provide cuddly teddy bears to children under seven attending A & E Departments at their acute hospitals.

The staff are able to offer young patients a small teddy bear to help alleviate their potential distress and teddy receives the same treatments as the child. The teddies then go home with the patients, who are encouraged to bring them with them to any subsequent outpatient visits.

The Teddies for Loving Care (TLC) scheme is funded by money donated by the Freemasons of the Province of North Wales (Hint) and was initially launched in March at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor by the Provincial Grand Master, Ieuan Redvers Jones. This week the initiative was extended to Glan Clwyd hospital when the first batch of colourful teddies was delivered.

Ieuan Redvers Jones from the Freemasons said: "I hope that in undertaking this simple scheme, the level of public awareness of the contribution made to the community by Freemasonry will be increased."

Carole Price Jones, Clinical Nurse Manager at Glan Clwyd hospital said: "The bears will make it easier for the department to treat young children without causing them too much distress and they feel less anxious seeing that teddy gets the same treatment. The fact that they then get to keep the bear also serves as a small reward."

Receiving the mountain of bears at the hospital is Jessica Jones (Aged 4) who was the first to take one home. An update on the success
of the venture

The Teddy Bear scheme is proving extremely popular, especially at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital. Due to the severe bad weather in January, the hospital ran out of teddy bears, and as soon as it was possible, W. Bro Laurence Crump, of Pegasus Lodge No.9124, the coordinator in the Wrexham area, dashed to Llandudno for a new supply.

As he was walking into the A & E unit, he met a husband and wife with their little daughter who had burnt her hand, clutching a teddy bear. Not knowing that Bro Laurence was a Mason, the father said to him: "The Masons have given this teddy bear free of charge to the hospital. I'm delighted that they are doing good work."

A few months ago, W. Bro Les Chamberlain of Yale Lodge, No 5636, met another couple whose young daughter had cut her hand badly. Her father, Ron Jones, told him: "I think it's a fantastic idea. It certainly helped my daughter to face things when she was treated."

Staff Nurse Barney Pitt said: "The scheme is very successful here. We give nearly every child a teddy and it calms them down when they arrive and if we have to do some evasive procedures, it keeps them occupied. We want to thank the Masons for their generosity."

Money to buy the teddy bears is raised by selling lapel badges. Have you bought yours yet? If not, see your Charity Steward who will be extremely pleased to sell you one.

I am amazed how well our patients for the day (Megan on this occasion) take to the job in hand, particularly looking after the Teddy Bears. In a conversation with Helen Schrimshaw, Ward Clerk she mentioned that the teddies just have such a wonderful calming effect on the children which allows the Nursing Staff to attend to the medical needs of the sick child. She also said that it was a wonderful idea and that she and the Nursing Staff were more than grateful to the Province of North Wales for their generosity.

The Province will launch the TLC Appeal during September at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan and finally the Wales Air Ambulance. The TLC Appeal has been so well received by the Brethren of the Province and we are now part of the network of Provinces supporting the TLC Appeal. For further information regarding the TLC Appeal please log on to www.tlcappeal.org

To date 600,000 teddies have been given out to children at A&E Hospitals throughout the United Kingdom. Five Teddy badges are available for a set at £2.50p each or why not buy a Gold Teddy at £12.50p., badges are available from Lodge Charity Stewards. Brethren have been asking me if they could purchase the actual Bears that are given to the children in Hospital, these are available at a cost of £5.00p either through your Charity Steward or direct from either W. Bro. David Gibbison or myself via E-mail.

The TLC Scheme
rolls out in Bangor!

Despite my aversion for Hospitals I have to admit that I derived great pleasure from visiting the Accident & Emergency Unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd Bangor. The pleasure did not come from being in an Hospital but in seeing how much we were doing to assist the staff and even more importantly the little children who were admitted into that unit.

The staff was delighted and praised our work. Indeed, before the launch, the person responsible for the Unit had, on the previous Saturday, given a Teddy to a young boy who had burned both his hands on a hotplate. He was extremely distressed. The Teddy brought a smile to his face and treating him became easier.

As the Bible so clearly states "just as you did it to one of these, who are members of my family, you did it to me".

Long may we continue to do so with pride.

Er cymaint fy nghas at Ysbytai pleser fu fy ymweld ag Uned Damweiniau Ysbyty Gwynedd yr wythnos diwethaf. Y pleser oedd dod i sylweddoli yn llawn gwerth ein hymdrech fel Brodyr i ddod a chysur i blant bach gyda´r Tedi.

Mae´r staff i gyd wrth ei bodd ac yn canmol ein gwaith. Ar y Sadwrn cyn cychwyn yr ymgyrch death bachgen bach i mewn i´r Uned. `Roedd wedi llosgi ei ddwy law ar "hotplate". `Roedd mewn cryn ofid. Er nad oedd yr ymgyrch mewn grym cymerodd y pennaeth arni ei hun i roi Tedi iddo. Daeth a gwen i´w wyneb a bu trin a´i friwiau yn llawer haws.

Mae´r Hen Air yn iawn "yn gymaint ag i chwi ei wneud i´r lleiaf o´r rhain fy mrodyr, i mi y gwnaethoch"

Hir y parhaom i wneud hyn.

Aims and Objectives

The Scheme has a simple objective namely - For Freemasons to provide small cuddly Teddy Bears to Accident & Emergency Units in Hospitals within the Province.

The medical staff in the hospital is then able to give, at their discretion, a Teddy Bears to children under the age of seven years, who in their opinion are in distress and where the staff feel that a soft toy (Teddy) to cuddle will help alleviate their distress.

Similar schemes are now active in fourteen Provinces throughout England and Wales to the acclaim of both Brethren and the general public at large. Each Province has benefited from positive publicity and the sense of satisfaction and commitment of the Brethren from within those Provinces.

The results from other Provinces shows that this simple act can significantly assist the Staff undertake their urgent work. On leaving the hospital the children take the Teddies home with them and are encouraged to bring the bear to any further out patient visits.

Establishing the Scheme in North Wales

There are three main hospitals in North Wales namely - Wrexham Maelor, Glan Clwyd Rhyl and Ysbyty Gwynedd Bangor. Due to its geological position within the Province Bangor seems the logical choice to initiate the scheme. The date for launch at Bangor has been set for 24th March 2009

Following consultation with the A & E staff at Bangor it has been established that over a period of twelve months, May 07 to May 08 there were in excess of 4200 children under the age of seven years admitted to the A & E unit, the two other hospitals submitted similar figures, Wrexham being slightly higher.

Provision of Teddy Bears and Metal Badges

There is now a TLC Teddy Bear design exclusively for this Masonic Initiative, the Teddies comply with all current health and safety regulations and are acceptable throughout the NHS.

The Metallic badge is also exclusively designed for this appeal at a cost of £2.50 per badge. Once the appeal has been launched we need to keep up the interest and impetus of Freemasons by regular updates on the Provincial Web Site, sale of Lapel Badges and being self promoting, many freemasons will know someone who has benefited.

Benefits for Freemasonry in the Province

This Scheme will raise the level of public awareness of the contribution made to the community by Freemasonry and will provide a greater understanding of the principles on which Freemasonry is founded

Each Teddy carries a tag that state, "Donated by Local Freemasons", which provides continuous evidence of the principles of Freemasonry in practice.

In conclusion the TLC Scheme will make a real and practical contribution to the community in general, and provides a real opportunity for us to put before the public one of our important principles in a discreet and meaningful way.
